久野真／Kuno Shin

久野真（1921〜1998）は、名古屋を拠点に国際的な活動を展開した美術家です。

愛知県名古屋市に生まれた久野は、1943年に東京高等師範学校芸能科（現・筑波大学）を卒業すると、海軍予備学生として入隊し、特別攻撃隊飛行操縦教官として敗戦を迎えました。戦後は新制作協会への出品を開始し、鋼鉄による抽象作品で新人賞を受賞しました。アンフォルメル運動の熱狂に沸いていた1950年代後半から1960年代前半の日本において、伝統的な画材から離れて生み出された久野の作品は、絵画の領域に新たな可能性を提示し、注目を集めました。

1960年に同会を退会してからは、アメリカやロンドンで個展を開催するなど活躍の場を海外へと広げ、1966年にはロックフェラー財団運営のジャパン・ソサエティの奨学金を得てニューヨークに研究滞在しました。帰国後の一時期は金属以外の素材で立体作品を手がけますが、その後、晩年まで取り組むこととなるステンレス・スチールを採用し、立体性を保ちつつも平面作品へと回帰する独自の展開を見せています。初期のステンレス作品では、不安定な構図のなかに幾何学形態を配置し、独特な緊張感を漂わせていましたが、1980年代半ばからは、それまで排除してきた曲線を活用し、時間の流れを喚起する詩情豊かな世界を創出するなど、新たな表現世界を意欲的に開拓していきました。

Shin Kuno (1921-1998) was an artist based in Nagoya who engaged in international activities.

Born in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Kuno graduated from the Tokyo Higher Normal School, Department of Arts (now University of Tsukuba) in 1943. After graduation, he enlisted as a naval reserve student and served as a flight instructor in the special attack unit, experiencing the end of the war. After the war, he began exhibiting at the Shinseisaku Association and won the Newcomer’s Award for his abstract works in steel. During the late 1950s to the early 1960s, a period marked by the fervor of the Art Informel movement in Japan, Kuno’s creations, departing from traditional materials, presented new possibilities within the realm of painting, garnering attention.

After leaving the Shinseisaku Association in 1960, Kuno expanded his artistic activities internationally, holding solo exhibitions in the United States and London. In 1966, he received a scholarship from the Japan Society, operated by the Rockefeller Foundation, leading to a research stay in New York. Upon his return to Japan, he briefly worked on three-dimensional pieces using materials other than metal. However, he later adopted stainless steel, a material he would engage with until his later years, demonstrating a unique progression that maintained three-dimensionality while returning to two-dimensional works. In his early stainless-steel works, geometric forms were placed within unstable compositions, creating a distinctive sense of tension. From the mid-1980s onward, he began incorporating curves, which he had previously excluded, to create a poetic and evocative world, invoking the passage of time and ambitiously exploring new realms of expression.
