Hattori Shunsho

Shunsho Hattori was a lacquer artist active mainly in Kyoto. Inheriting the traditions nurtured in Kyoto and combining a wide variety of designs, materials, and techniques, we have created dazzling forms with Japanese beauty and a unique aesthetic sense.

Born in Kyoto in 1943, Hattori studied lacquer art in the Department of Lacquer Arts, part of the Arts and Crafts Course at Kyoto Municipal Hiyoshigaoka High School (now known as Kyoto City Senior High School of Art). After graduation, he continued to create and exhibit his work, winning numerous awards. In 1970, he formed the group called “Forme” with other young lacquer artists in Kyoto, and continued to be active as a member of this coterie until it was disbanded in 1978. Influenced by the avant-garde art that flourished in the 1960s and 1970s, he ambitiously pursued the unknown possibilities of lacquer art by using new materials such as acrylic and cashew lacquer. In 1975, he went to Europe to study etching, further deepening his artistic perspective.

Until around 1980, he mainly produced two-dimensional works such as large panels and folding screens, depicting abstract and geometric mental landscapes, mainly using the sun and the moon as motifs, with clear color contrasts. From the 1980s onward, the company began using raden (mother-of-pearl, seashell) from Mexico and New Zealand. The shimmering luster of this material brought natural phenomena such as waves, light, and wind to life. Gradually, his style became more figurative and his decorative shelves and boxes with floral and bird themes became more aesthetically appealing. In his later years, Hattori continued to pursue new possibilities without staying with the status quo, such as incorporating the unique color and luster of tamamushi (jewel beetles). He was truly a leader of Kyoto’s lacquer art.
