ドーム兄弟／Daum Freres
ドーム兄弟は、エミール・ガレと同じくフランス東部の町ナンシーを拠点に活躍したガラス工芸家です。兄のオーギュスト（1853〜1909）が経営を、弟のアントナン（1864〜1930）が芸術監督を担当するという共同運営で、父から引き継いだガラス工場を、今日まで名を残すブランドへと飛躍させました。
当初は日用品の生産を中心としていましたが、1889年のパリ万国博覧会におけるガレの華々しい成功に刺激を受け、芸術性の高いアール・ヌーヴォー調の作品に取り組み始めます。ドームの工房は分業システムを採用し、パート・ド・ヴェール作家のアマルリック・ワルターや、彫刻家のアンリ・ベルジェといった芸術家たちが専門家として招かれました。彼らの手により、絵画的な美しいデザインや繊細なレリーフ彫刻が施され、造形的に水準の高い作品が数多く生産されています。装飾方法も多岐にわたり、色ガラスの細片を熔解した吹きガラスにまぶし、一体化させるヴィトリフィカシオンや、複雑な色文様をガラスの中に作り出し奥行きを生むアンテルカレールなど、様々な技法が開発、駆使されました。
アール・ヌーヴォーが退潮していった1920年代にはアール・デコ様式に切り替え、その後もクリスタルガラスのオブジェや、サルバドール・ダリがデザインしたパート・ド・ヴェール作品を手がけるなど、制作の幅を柔軟に広げていきました。時代の潮流を敏感に察知するアンテナと順応性によって息の長い活躍を見せたドームは、現在も高級クリスタルガラス専門のメーカーとして存続しています。
Daum Freres were glass artisans who, like Emile Galle, thrived in the town of Nancy in eastern France. Operating under a joint management system, with the older brother Auguste (1853-1909) overseeing the business and the younger brother Antonin (1864-1930) serving as the artistic director, they transformed the glass factory inherited from their father into a renowned brand that remains recognized to this day.
Initially focusing on the production of everyday objects, they were inspired by Galle’s resounding success at the 1889 Paris Universal Exposition and began to venture into the creation of highly artistic Art Nouveau-style works. Their workshop adopted a division of labor system and invited specialists such as Amalric Walter, a master of Pâte de Verre, and sculptor Henri Bergé. Under their guidance, visually stunning designs and delicate relief sculptures were applied, resulting in the production of numerous highly crafted artworks. Various decorative techniques were employed, including the vitrification technique, which involved fusing fragments of colored glass onto blown glass to achieve integration, and the intercalaire technique, which created intricate color patterns within the glass, producing a sense of depth. These techniques were developed and utilized in various ways.
During the waning of the Art Nouveau movement in the 1920s, they shifted to the Art Deco style. They continued to expand their range of creations, working on crystal glass objects and even collaborating with Salvador Dalí on Pâte de Verre works. With their keen awareness of the prevailing trends and adaptability, they demonstrated their enduring presence. Today, they continue to exist as a prestigious manufacturer specializing in high-end crystal glass.
