ルーシー・リー／Lucie Rie
ルーシー・リーは、20世紀を代表するイギリスの陶芸家です。1902年、ルーシーはウィーンの裕福なユダヤ系の家庭に生まれます。この頃のウィーンでは、画家のグスタフ・クリムトや建築家のヨーゼフ・ホフマンの活動により、芸術界に新たな気運が胎動していました。こうした時流の中で、彼女の瑞々しく先鋭的な感性が育まれることになります。ルーシーが陶芸家を目指す契機となったのは、1921年から通い始めたウィーン工業美術学校における、ろくろとの出会いでした。その面白さに魅せられた彼女は作陶を始め、めきめきと頭角を現していきます。
ほどなく、国際的な展覧会で受賞を重ね、陶芸家としての地位を確立しますが、その一方で、戦争の足音がとどまることなく迫りくる時代でもありました。迫害の影が忍び寄る1938年にロンドンへ亡命し、それ以降、半世紀以上にわたってこの地を拠点に制作を続けました。同じくドイツ出身の陶芸家であるハンス・コパー（1920〜1981）とは、亡命先であるロンドンの工房で共に働き、ときには共同制作にも取り組みながら、それぞれ独自の作風を築き上げていきました。
ルーシーがろくろから生み出す、薄く優美な輪郭は抑揚のきいた造形を作りあげ、繊細な印象と凛とした佇まいで鑑賞者を魅了します。また、象嵌や掻き落としといった手法による独創的な文様や、あたたかく名状しがたい釉薬の色合いからは、常に新鮮な驚きと喜びにあふれていたルーシーの制作風景を思い浮かべることができるでしょう。
Lucie Rie, one of the most famous British ceramic artists of the 20th century. Lucie was born in 1902 to a wealthy Jewish family in Vienna. During this time, Vienna was experiencing a new wave of artistic movement fueled by the activities of painter Gustav Klimt and architect Josef Hoffmann. It was within this cultural milieu that her fresh and cutting-edge sensibility was nurtured. Her encounter with the potter’s wheel at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, which she attended from 1921, sparked her passion for pottery. Enthralled by the allure of the potter’s wheel, she began creating ceramics and quickly emerged as a prominent figure in the field.
Soon after, she garnered awards at international exhibitions, firmly establishing herself as a ceramic artist. However, it was also a time when the ominous footsteps of war grew closer. In 1938, with the shadow of persecution looming, she sought exile in London, where she continued her artistic pursuits for over half a century. Collaborating with Hans Coper (1920-1981), a fellow German-born potter, in their London studio, they both worked on joint projects while developing their own distinct styles.
Lucie’s delicate and graceful forms, shaped on the potter’s wheel, captivate viewers with their dynamic contours and refined presence. The creative patterns achieved through inlaying and scraping techniques, along with the warm and indescribable hues of the glazes, evoke the creative process of Lucie, which was always filled with fresh surprises and joy.
