鷲見康夫／Sumi Yasuo

鷲見康夫（1925〜2015）は、「具体美術協会」の初期メンバーであり、解散まで在籍していた抽象画家です。

関西大学、立命館大学を卒業後、大阪の豊崎中学校にて教師として勤務していた鷲見は、中学の同僚であり「具体美術協会」の創設メンバーだった嶋本昭三の勧めで絵を描き始めます。1954年に第7回芦屋市展に出品し、その際に吉原治良との出会いを果たすと、翌年には「具体美術協会」の会員となり、以降、同協会の全展覧会に作品を発表し続けました。初期の作品は、金網に古布を貼りつけ、その上からエナメル塗料を施すなど、様々な素材がぶつかり合うことで生まれる力強いマチエールを特徴としています。その後、これまでにない斬新な造形を試行錯誤するなかで、そろばんが描く軌跡の美しさを発見し、これを用いたオートマチックな抽象画を次々と制作しました。そろばんのほかにも、ヴァイブレーターや櫛、番傘など、およそ絵筆とはほど遠い道具を積極的に採用し、作者の意図や意識、ひいては精神や才能の限界をも超える作品を生み出そうと実験を重ねました。

しかし、「無意識」がそのまま「無機質」に直結するわけではありません。「きたない芸術はあり得ないということはない」、「やけくそ・ふまじめ・ちゃらんぽらん」など、独自の哲学をもって芸術に向き合い続けた鷲見の作品には、一瞬のひらめきや、それに対する子どものような喜びの痕跡もまた、鮮明に刻まれているのです。

Yasuo Sumi (1925-2015) was an abstract painter and an early member of the “Gutai Art Association”, remaining affiliated until its dissolution.

After graduating from Kansai University and Ritsumeikan University, Sumi, who worked as a teacher at Toyosaki Junior High School in Osaka, began painting at the suggestion of his junior high school colleague and founding member of the “Gutai Art Association”, Shozo Shimamoto. In 1954, he exhibited at the 7th Ashiya City Exhibition, where he encountered Jiro Yoshihara. The following year, he became a member of the “Gutai Art Association” and continued to exhibit his works in all of the association’s exhibitions. His early works were characterized by the powerful materiality created by the collision of various materials, such as affixing old cloth to wire mesh and applying enamel paint on top. Later, as he experimented with innovative forms, he discovered the beauty of the traces drawn by an abacus, producing a series of automatic abstract paintings using this tool. In addition to the abacus, he actively adopted unconventional tools like vibrators, combs and coarse oilpaper umbrellas, aiming to create works that went beyond the artist’s intention, consciousness, and even the limits of spirit and talent.

However, “unconsciousness” does not directly lead to “lifelessness”. He approached art with his unique philosophy, stating, “There is no such thing as dirty art” and an ongoing engaging with art with terms like “reckless, unserious and carefree”. Traces of fleeting inspiration and childlike joy in response to it are vividly engraved in his works, demonstrating his continuous exploration of art.
