和南城孝志／Wanajo Takashi

和南城孝志（1949～2003）は、日本とイタリアを拠点に活動した彫刻家です。

群馬県桐生市生まれの和南城は、群馬県立高崎高校では美術部に在籍し、卒業後は彫刻家の矢崎虎夫（1904～1988）に師事して木彫と塑像の基礎を学びました。1972年にイタリアへ渡ると、国立ローマ美術アカデミー彫刻科にて、イタリアの巨匠ヴェナンツォ・クロチェッティ（1913～2003）の指導を受けながら、ブロンズなどの制作を始めました。1976年に同アカデミーを修了し、帰国した和南城は、その翌年、故郷の群馬で初めての彫刻展を開催しました。以降、ローマ市内のティブルティーナと、石材採掘が盛んなピエトラサンタにアトリエを構え、作品を制作、発表していきます。第4回、および第6回目のダンテ国際彫刻ビエンナーレでは、ダンテの『神曲』をテーマとした作品で金賞を受賞したほか、国内では桐生市文化センターや高崎シティギャラリーなど、故郷である群馬県の施設を中心に制作の依頼を受け、個々の空間に調和しつつも新鮮な風景を提示するモニュメントを数多く手がけました。1995年からは群馬県吾妻郡高山村に拠点を移し、53歳の若さで夭折するまで意欲的に創作活動を続けました。高山村のアトリエには、「メビウスの輪」を彷彿とさせる未完の作品が、闘病生活の間もずっと置かれていたと言います。

「石を刻むということはイメージの世界の扉を叩く行為である」という和南城の言葉の通り、様々な自然物が独自のイメージによって掘りおこされ、形づくられています。たとえば、イタリアの赤大理石を用いた「イメージの太陽」シリーズでは、太陽がメビウスの輪のようにシンボライズされており、【イメージの水】（1992年）では、水が静かに流れていく印象を表現しています。【光の山脈（やまなみ）】（1992年）にも当てはまりますが、自然をモチーフにした和南城の作品は、火・水・土・風という四大元素を喚起させるように、四つの面によって構成されていることが多いです。

また、様々なバージョンで作られている「メビウスの輪」シリーズは、イタリアの古い山岳都市で目の当たりにした、ラビリンスのような生活空間に着想を得ています。たくさんの家が斜面にひしめき合って建ち、屋根の上から地下に至るまで道が張りめぐらされ、表も裏もなくなったその不思議な空間性が、和南城の創作意欲を刺激したのです。イタリアをもう一つの故郷として愛していた彼ならではの発想と造形と言えます。

Takashi Wanajo (1949-2003) was a sculptor who worked based in Japan and Italy.

Born in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture, Wanajo was a member of the art club at Gunma Prefectural Takasaki High School, and after graduation, he studied the basics of wood carving and sculpture under the sculptor Torao Yazaki (1904-1988). In 1972, he moved to Italy, where he began producing works in materials such as bronze while studying under the Italian master Venanzo Crocetti (1913-2003) at the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome. He completed his studies at the academy in 1976 and returned to Japan, where he held his first sculpture exhibition in his hometown of Gunma the following year. Wanajo set up studios in Tiburtina, Rome, and Pietrasanta, a town known for its stone quarries, and he continued to create and exhibit his works. At the 4th and 6th Dante International Sculpture Biennials, he won the gold prize for his works themed on Dante’s “Divine Comedy”. He also received commissions for his work mainly from facilities in Gunma Prefecture, such as the Kiryu City Cultural Center and Takasaki City Gallery, where he created monuments that harmonized with individual spaces while presenting fresh landscapes. From 1995 until his untimely death at the age of 53, he continued his ambitious creative activities after relocating his base to Takayama Village, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture. It is said that an unfinished work reminiscent of a “Mobius strip” was kept in his studio in Takayama Village even during his battle with illness.

In line with Wanajo’s words, “Carving stone is an act of knocking on the door of the world of imagination”, various natural objects are unearthed and shaped by his unique imagination.
For example, in the “Sun of the Imagination” series, made using red marble from Italy, the sun is symbolized like a Mobius strip, and in “Imagination of Water” (1992), the impression of water flowing quietly is expressed. This also applies to “Mountain Range of Light” (1992), and Wanajo’s works inspired by nature often consist of four surfaces, evoking the four elements of fire, water, earth, and wind.

The “Mobius Strip” series, created in various versions, was inspired by the labyrinth-like living spaces he encountered in an old mountainous city in Italy. It can be said that his conception and form are unique to him, who loved Italy as another hometown.
