フランソワ・デコルシュモン／Francois Decorchemont
フランソワ・デコルシュモンは、20世紀に活躍したフランスのガラス工芸家です。色ガラスなどの粉末を型に詰めて成形する「パート・ド・ヴェール」の制作に生涯を捧げ、成形や鋳造、研磨の方法、素材の組成などを独自に創出しました。
代々工芸に携わってきた家系に生まれ、彫刻家の父が教鞭をとるパリの国立工芸学校で風景画を学んだデコルシュモンは、卒業後、陶芸家のエルンスト・シャプレのもとで陶芸の修業を重ねました。しかし、1902年にアルベール・ダムーズのパート・ド・ヴェール作品に衝撃を受けて以降は、その技法の研究に没頭するようになり、1905年までに制作の主軸がガラス素材へと移行しました。
初期は薄手の作品が多く、花や昆虫など、アール・ヌーヴォーの時代を反映したモチーフが、透明感のある豊かな色彩で形作られました。アール・デコに転換していった1920年代には、その潮流に沿うかたちで幾何学的な文様や硬化した厚手の造形へと移り変わりますが、金属酸化物による発色の痕跡は、むしろ流動的な美しさを生み出しています。1930年からは、教会から依頼を受けてパート・ド・ヴェールのステンドグラスを制作しており、1935年に完成したパリのサント・オディール教会のものは終生の大作となりました。1971年に天寿を全うするまで、デコルシュモンの創作意欲は衰えることなく、生まれ育ったコンシュの工房で多くの作品を手がけ続けました。

Francois Decorchemont was a prominent French glass artist who thrived in the 20th century. He dedicated his life to the creation of “Pâte de verre”, a technique in which powdered glass and other materials are packed into molds for shaping. He developed his own methods for molding, casting, polishing, and composing materials.
Born into a lineage of craftsmen, he studied landscape painting at the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris, where his father, who was a sculptor, taught. After graduating, He pursued an apprenticeship in pottery under the guidance of ceramicist Ernest Chaplet, honing his skills in the craft. However, in 1902, he was profoundly influenced by the pâte de verre works of Albert Dammouse. Afterward, he immersed himself in the study of the technique, transitioning to glass as his main material by 1905. In his early period, he predominantly created thin pieces, incorporating motifs such as flowers and insects that reflected the Art Nouveau era. These pieces were crafted with vibrant and translucent colors. In the 1920s, as the transition to Art Deco took place, his works also shifted towards geometric patterns and thicker, solid forms in line with the prevailing aesthetic. However, the traces of coloration resulting from metal oxides added a sense of fluid beauty.
After 1930, he received commissions from churches to create pâte de verre stained glass, with the windows he completed for the Sainte-Odile Church in Paris in 1935 becoming a lifelong masterpiece. Until his passing in 1971, his creative drive remained unwavering, and he continued producing numerous works in his workshop in Conches, where he was born and raised.
