ペドロ・コロネル／Pedoro Coronel
ペドロ・コロネル（1923～）は、メキシコ出身の画家、彫刻家です。20世紀前半の大壁画運動の中心を担った三巨匠、ディエゴ・リベラ（1886～1957）、ホセ・クレメンテ・オロスコ（1883～1949）、ダビッド・アルファロ・シケイロス（1896～1974）以後の現代作家として位置付けられています。また、弟のラファエル・コロネルは、陰影と風刺に富んだ具象画を得意とする画家です。
サカテカス州サカテカスに生まれたコロネルは、若い頃よりメキシコ市に住んでいました。1940年よりラ・エスメラルダ絵画彫刻学校に在籍し、卒業後は1945年から1946年まで、同校で彫刻を教えています。1946年からはヨーロッパを旅してまわるようになり、この時期に画家のヴィクトル・ブローネル（1903～1966）や彫刻家のコンスタンティン・ブランクーシ（1876～1957）のアトリエに通い、自身の芸術に磨きをかけていきます。以降、ヨーロッパだけでなく、アメリカ、カナダ、そして日本にも足を運び研究を重ねました。彼の彫刻作品は早くから人々の関心を集めていましたが、海外への研究旅行を経てからは、絵画も注目を浴びるようになりました。
1961年にはパリのル・ポワン・カルディナル画廊での個展で大好評を博したほか、アメリカや日本の画廊でも展覧会を催すなど、活動の場を広げるなかで、一連の作品は国境を超えてその価値を認められていきます。さらに特筆すべきは、日本でも1978年に開催された「世界の現代画家50人展」への出品です。世界各国の優れた現代作家たちによる多彩な芸術活動をまとめ、現代美術の動向や今後の展望を明らかにしようとした本展覧会において、グラハム・サザーランド（1903～1980）やジャン＝ミッシェル・フォロン（1934～2005）といった気鋭の作家たちとともに選出されたコロネルは、まぎれもなく現代を代表する画家の一人として高い評価を得ていたと言えます。
コロネルの抽象画は、鮮やかで強弱のきいた配色と、インパクトの強い曲線的なフォルムが特徴的です。たとえば、【沈黙の時代Ⅰ】（1973年）は濃いピンク色をベースとして、赤や水色、緑色に塗られた独特のフォルムが不規則に散りばめられた作品です。先述の「世界の現代画家50人展」に出品された【冬の声】（1976年）も、赤紫色を下地に青系統の多様なフォルムという似た構成を持っており、いずれも鑑賞者を瞬時に惹きつける鮮烈なイメージと、深い思索の時間へと誘う不可思議な造形が併存し、響き合っています。また、インディオの古代文明を思わせつつ、バロック的な印象を与えるダイナミックで情動的な雰囲気も、コロネル作品の大きな特徴です。そんな一連の作品の根底には、人間の存在というものに対する思索や芸術への激しい情熱が奔流しているのです。
Pedro Coronel (1923–) is a Mexican painter and sculptor. He is positioned as a contemporary artist following the triumvirate of Diego Rivera (1886–1957), José Clemente Orozco (1883–1949), and David Alfaro Siqueiros (1896–1974), who led the Mexican muralist art movement in the first half of the 20th century. His brother, Rafael Coronel, is a painter specializing in figurative art rich in shadow and satire.
Born in Zacatecas, Zacatecas, Coronel lived in Mexico City from a young age. He attended La Esmeralda National School of Painting, Sculpture, and Printmaking from 1940, and after graduating, he taught sculpture there from 1945 to 1946. From 1946, he began traveling around Europe, during which time he frequented the studios of the painter Victor Brauner (1903–1966) and the sculptor Constantin Brancusi (1876–1957), refining his own artistry. Subsequently, he continued his studies not only in Europe but also in the United States, Canada, and Japan. While his sculptures had attracted attention early on, his paintings began to garner notice after his research trips abroad.
In 1961, he received acclaim for his solo exhibition at Galerie Le Point Cardinal in Paris, and as he expanded his activities by holding exhibitions in galleries in the United States and Japan, his works came to be recognized for their value beyond borders. Particularly notable was his participation in the “Exhibition of 50 Contemporary Painters from around the World” held in Japan in 1978. In this exhibition, which aimed to showcase the diverse artistic activities of outstanding contemporary artists from around the world and shed light on the trends and future prospects of contemporary art, Coronel was selected alongside avant-garde artists such as Graham Sutherland (1903–1980) and Jean-Michel Folon (1934–2005), undoubtedly gaining high praise as one of the representative painters of the modern era. Coronel’s abstract paintings are characterized by vibrant, nuanced color schemes and impactful, curvilinear forms. For example, ” The Age of Silence I ” (1973) features a base of deep pink with unique forms painted in red, cyan, and green scattered irregularly across the canvas. Similarly, “The Voice of Winter” (1976), exhibited at the aforementioned “Exhibition of 50 Contemporary Painters from around the World”, also has a similar composition with various forms in blue hues over a background of reddish-purple, both pieces possessing striking imagery that instantly captivates viewers while inviting them into a realm of deep contemplation. Furthermore, a major characteristic of Coronel’s works is the dynamic and emotive atmosphere that evokes ancient indigenous civilizations while also imparting a Baroque impression. At the core of this series of works lies a torrent of contemplation on the human existence and a fervent passion for art.
