横尾忠則／Yokoo Tadanori

横尾忠則は、兵庫県出身の現代美術家、作家です。長きにわたる創作活動の中で、特定の様式に縛られることなく、様々なジャンルを横断しながら日本の芸術文化をリードしてきました。

1950年代後半から1960年代前半にかけて、横尾は神戸新聞社や日本デザインセンター等でグラフィックデザイナーとしての実績を積みます。そして独立後、土方巽や寺山修司、唐十郎らが手がける舞台芸術のポスターを次々と制作し、総天然色と日本の土着的なイメージが目を引く独特の画風で脚光を浴びました。1968年からは版画の制作にも着手し、現在までに230点以上の作品を生み出しています。活躍の場は国内にとどまらず、1969年には第6回パリ青年ビエンナーレの版画部門でグランプリを受賞し、1972年にニューヨーク近代美術館で個展を開くなど、華々しいキャリアを重ねました。1980年に同美術館で開催された「ピカソ展」は、横尾に強い衝撃と影響を与えます。これを契機として、かねてより関心を深めていた絵画制作へと転換する決意をこめて「画家宣言」を発表し、ニュー・ペインティングにも通じる具象絵画を意欲的に創作しました。

多様なモチーフと手法によって築きあげられた横尾の世界観は、唯一無二の存在感を放ち、鑑賞者や後続のアーティストたちを魅了してやみません。

Tadanori Yokoo is a contemporary artist and writer from Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Throughout his long creative career, he has been a leading figure in Japanese art and culture, transcending specific styles and crossing various genres.

In the late 1950s to early 1960s, he built a reputation as a graphic designer, working for the Kobe Newspaper Company and the Japan Design Center, among others. After becoming independent, he created a series of posters for theatrical arts by artists such as Tatsumi Hijikata, Shūji Terayama and Jūrō Kara. With his unique artistic style characterized by full natural colors and indigenous Japanese imagery, he attracted attention and gained prominence. From 1968, he also began producing art prints and has created over 230 artworks to date. His achievements extended beyond Japan’s borders, winning the Grand Prize in the art print category at the 6th Paris Youth Biennale in 1969 and holding a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1972, establishing a remarkable career. The “Picasso Exhibition” held at the same museum in 1980 had a strong impact and influence on him. Taking this opportunity, he made a decisive commitment to shift his focus to painting, which he had been increasingly interested in. He announced his “Declaration as a Painter” as a symbol of this determination and enthusiastically created figurative paintings that also resonated with the movement of New Painting.
