エルズワース・ケリーは、戦後から現代にかけて活躍したニューヨーク出身の画家です。
ケリーはボストン美術館付属学校で学んだ後、奨学金を得て1948年にパリ国立美術学校に入学します。この時期にマティスやブランクーシ、アルプ、ヴァントンゲルローといった先達から大きな影響を受けるとともに、ロマネスク建築やビザンチン様式のイコンなどにも関心を示し、積極的に鑑賞しました。ケリーの描く幾何学的な形態が、植物や窓、建築など現実に存在する事物から着想を得て生み出されている点は、この留学での経験が基盤となっています。1954年に帰国後、マンハッタンにアトリエを構え、絵画を中心に、彫刻やレリーフ、版画も並行して制作します。筆触や色ムラが極限まで削ぎ落とされ、シャープなフォルムと鮮やかな単色によって構成された明快な画風は、当時のアメリカで隆盛を誇っていた抽象表現主義とは一線を画していました。このような作風から、ケリーは「ハード・エッジ」の第一人者として位置づけられています。
晩年には、構想に30年以上をかけた大規模なインスタレーションを手掛けるなど、ケリーの作品は多様な造形で世界各地に送り出され、独特の存在感を放っています。東京国際フォーラムの壁面パネル【赤と黒】は、日本で見られる数少ない作品の一つです。
Ellsworth Kelly is a painter from New York who achieved prominence from the postwar period to the present day.
After studying at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University in Boston, he received a scholarship and enrolled at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris (Beaux-Arts de Paris) in 1948. During this time, he was greatly influenced by predecessors such as Matisse, Brancusi, Arp, Vantongerloo and he was actively interested in and appreciated Romanesque architecture and Byzantine-style icons. The geometric forms depicted by him are inspired by real objects such as plants, windows, and architecture, and this experience during his study abroad formed the foundation for his work. Upon returning to the United States in 1954, he established a studio in Manhattan and engaged in painting as well as sculpture, relief, and printmaking concurrently. His distinct artistic style, characterized by sharp forms and vibrant monochromatic compositions with minimal brushwork and color variation, set him apart from the prevailing abstract expressionism that was flourishing in America at the time. Due to this approach, he was regarded as a leading figure of “Hard-edge” painting.
In his later years, he embarked on large-scale installations that he had been conceptualizing for over 30 years. His works, spanning various forms, have been exhibited worldwide and exude a unique presence. The wall panel artwork “Red and Black” at the Tokyo International Forum is one of the few pieces that can be seen in Japan.
