ジュリアン・オピー／Julian Opie
ジュリアン・オピー（1958〜）は、イギリスの現代美術界を代表するアーティストです。一連の作品はユニークかつシンプルなアート言語によって表現されており、受け手に専門的な知識や理解を求めず、直感的に本質を捉えることができる強度と伝達力を兼ね備えています。
ロンドン生まれのオピーは、ロンドン大学ゴールドスミス校にて現代コンセプチュアル・アーティストのマイケル・クレッグ＝マーティン（1941〜）に師事し、1983年に同校を卒業後もロンドンを拠点に創作活動を展開していきました。同地の老舗であるリッソン・ギャラリーで作品が展示されると、数年のうちにヨーロッパの主要な美術館やギャラリーに出品するようになります。
オピーが一躍イギリスのアートシーンに躍り出るきっかけとなったのは、金属製の彫刻作品でした。印象派やモダンアートの名画を大胆に構成し直したその彫刻は革新的であり、絵画や芸術のありかたを人々に問いかける力を持ちました。1980年代後半には、一転して工業製品のような彫刻を手がけていきます。人々が日常的に利用しているものの機能やイメージを一旦はぎ取り、純粋な「形」として改めて提示することにより、新鮮な視覚体験をもたらしたのです。
一目でオピーの作品だとわかる1990年代後半以降の作風は、「省略の美」と称されています。風景や人物といった伝統的なモチーフを扱いつつも、描く要素を最小限に絞り、ピクトグラムやアニメのように徹底的に簡略化させた画面は、洗練された現代的なイメージを作りあげることに成功しています。その一方、単なる無機質な記号に陥ることなく、モチーフの魅力や特徴を生き生きと再現しているところにも、彼の画力や技術が窺えます。その制作過程も独特であり、たとえば代表作の一つである「ポートレイト」シリーズでは、何百枚と撮影したモデルの写真から、特徴がよく出ているものをいくつか選んで重ね合わせ、精巧にトレースしてから単純化していきます。なお、この人物画のシリーズでは、元の写真を想起させる表情が描かれたものと、顔のパーツを省略し尽くし、極限まで単純化させたものの2種類があります。
オピーの活躍の場は美術界にとどまらず、イギリスのロックバンド・Blur（ブラー）のジャケットデザインや、英国バレエ団やU2のステージデザインなど幅広い分野のプロジェクトに携わってきました。ユニクロとのコラボTシャツも記憶に新しいように、彼の作品は商業美術界でも絶大な人気を博しています。古典的な肖像画やエジプトの象形文字から、公共の看板や交通標識まで、オピーは常に伝統と最先端の双方を研究し、自分なりに再解釈しながら世界の見方を変えていきます。また、浮世絵の収集家でもあり、広重や歌麿からの影響もよく知られている彼は、日本にもゆかりのある作家と言えるでしょう。
Julian Opie (1958-) is a leading British contemporary artist. His series of works are expressed through a unique and simple artistic language, possessing both intensity and communicative power that allows the viewer to intuitively grasp the essence without requiring specialized knowledge or understanding.
Born in London, Opie studied under the contemporary conceptual artist Michael Craig-Martin (1941-present) at Goldsmiths, University of London, and continued his creative activities based in London after graduating in 1983. His works began to be exhibited in major European museums and galleries within a few years after being showcased at the renowned Lisson Gallery in London.
Opie rose to prominence in the British art scene with his metal sculpture works. These sculptures, boldly reconfiguring masterpieces of Impressionism and Modern Art, were innovative and posed questions about the nature of painting and art to viewers. In the late 1980s, he shifted to creating sculptures resembling industrial products. By stripping away the function and imagery of everyday objects people commonly use, and presenting them anew as pure “forms”, Opie brought about fresh visual experiences.
Since the late 1990s, Opie’s style, recognizable at a glance, has been termed “the beauty of simplification”. While dealing with traditional motifs such as landscapes and figures, his screens are minimized to the utmost, thoroughly simplified resembling pictograms or cartoons, successfully creating sophisticated contemporary images. Moreover, without merely becoming inert symbols, his works vividly reproduce the charm and characteristics of the motifs, showcasing his artistic skill and technique. His unique production process is evident, for instance, in one of his iconic series, “Portraits” where he selects several photos of models taken from hundreds, layers them, meticulously traces, and then simplifies them. In this series of portraits, there are two types: one that depicts expressions reminiscent of the original photographs, and another that simplifies the facial features to the utmost, almost to the point of omission. Opie’s influence extends beyond the art world, as he has been involved in various projects across a wide range of fields, including designing album covers for the British rock band Blur, stage designs for the English National Ballet and U2, among others. His collaboration with Uniqlo for T-shirts is also noteworthy, indicating his significant popularity in the commercial art world. Opie’s works, ranging from classical portraits and Egyptian hieroglyphs to public billboards and traffic signs, constantly explore and reinterpret both tradition and cutting-edge trends, reshaping perspectives of the world. Furthermore, known as a collector of ukiyo-e (a genre of Japanese traditional painting) prints, influenced by artists like Hiroshige and Utamaro, Opie can be considered an artist with connections to Japan.
