嶋本昭三／Shimamoto Shozo

画家の嶋本昭三は、「具体美術協会」に創設当初から在籍していた主要メンバーの一人です。常に時代の先端を走り続けた彼は晩年に至るまで、スケールの大きなパフォーマンスを繰り広げました。

1928年、大阪に生まれた嶋本は、関西学院大学文学部に在学していた1947年より、画家の吉原治良に師事するようになります。1950年代前半に制作した、古新聞を貼り合わせてカンヴァスに見立てたものに穴を開けた作品は、吉原から高い評価を受けました。以降、彼は吉原門下生のリーダーとして先頭に立ち、雑誌「具体」の発刊においても中心的な役割を担いました。「具体美術協会」が本格的に始動すると、嶋本はトタンに穴を開けた作品や、上を歩くことのできる体験型の作品、アセチレンガスの爆発によって絵の具をカンヴァスにはじき飛ばす「大砲絵画」など、作者の意図を超えて形を成す、そんな新しい造形を次々と生み出しました。中でも、絵の具を瓶に詰めてカンヴァスに投げつける「ビン投げ」は、嶋本を象徴するパフォーマンスです。

「具体美術協会」を退会した後も、この実験精神が衰えることはなく、女性の裸体を転写する「女拓」やスキンヘッド・アート、メール・アートといった分野に挑戦し、美術表現における様々な枠組みや概念を容易に飛び越えていきました。「芸術とは、人を驚かせることである」という自身の言葉の通り、嶋本のエネルギッシュな活動と作品は今もなお、観る者に新鮮な驚きをもたらしています。

The painter Shozo Shimamoto was one of the key members of the “Gutai Art Association” from the beginning. Always at the forefront of the times, he continued to work on a large scale until his later years.

Born in Osaka in 1928, Shimamoto began studying under the painter Jiro Yoshihara in 1947 while a student at the School of Humanities at Kwansei Gakuin University. The works created in the early 1950s, where holes were made in pieces created by pasting old newspapers together and resembling canvases, received high praise from Yoshihara. Afterward, he took on the role of leader among Yoshihara’s disciples and played a central role in the publication of the magazine “Gutai”. When the Gutai Art Association began in earnest, Shimamoto created a series of new forms that took shape beyond his intentions. These included a work in which holes were drilled in tin sheets, an interactive work that visitors could walk on, and a “cannon paintings” in which an explosion of acetylene gas sprayed paint onto a canvas. Of these, “bottle throwing”, in which paint is filled into bottles and thrown onto a canvas, is Shimamoto’s most iconic performance.

Even after he left the Gutai Art Association, this spirit of experimentation did not diminish, and he easily transcended various frameworks and concepts of artistic expression, challenging fields such as “Nyo-taku” a transcription of a female nude body, skinhead art, and mail art.
As Shimamoto himself said, “Art is to surprise people” and his energetic activities and works continue to bring fresh astonishment to viewers even today.
