木下佳通代／Kinoshita Kazuyo

木下佳通代は、神戸を拠点に活躍した美術家です。

1939年、神戸に生まれた木下は、京都市立美術大学西洋画科で学んだのち、1960年代から本格的に創作活動を開始しました。折しも、前衛芸術は過渡期を迎えており、具体美術協会が関西の美術界を牽引する一方、反芸術運動が全国各地で活発化していました。そのような時代を背景に、木下は1965年から68年まで、河口龍夫（1940〜）を中心に結成されたグループ「位（い）」に参加し、神戸在住の若手作家たちとともに独自の芸術を模索していきました。

木下の創作は、前期の写真作品と、晩年まで描き続けた後期の絵画作品に大きく分けられます。写真を用いたコラージュやドローイングを制作していたのが、1970年代の頃です。こうした写真作品は国際的にも高い評価を受け、1981年にはドイツ・ハイデルベルクで個展を開催するに至りました。しかし、1980年代前後からは油絵へと回帰し、時間や空間を平面上で捉え直すという新たな試みを実践していきます。力強いストロークで筆跡が重ねられ、重層的で奥行きのある画面が構成された木下の絵画は、言葉を超えて自立する存在感と生命力にあふれています。これらの作品を通して、彼女が生涯にわたって追求した「我々が存在する世界の中における存在とは何か」という問いに対する、答えの一つを見出すことができるでしょう。

Kazuyo Kinoshita was an artist who was based in Kobe and was active there.

Born in Kobe in 1939, Kinoshita began his artistic endeavors after studies in Western painting at the Kyoto City University of Arts since the 1960s. At the same time, avant-garde art was undergoing a transitional phase, with the Gutai Art Association leading the art scene in the Kansai region, while anti-art movements were becoming increasingly active nationwide. With this period as a background, Kinoshita participated in the group “I”, founded by Tatsuo Kawaguchi (1940-), from 1965 to 1968, and together with other young artists living in Kobe, she explored her own unique form of art.

Kinoshita’s work is roughly divided into her early photography and her later paintings, which she produced until the end of his life. During the 1970s, she was creating artworks utilizing photography-based collages and drawings. These photographic works garnered significant international acclaim, leading to a solo exhibition held in Heidelberg, Germany, in 1981. Since the late 1980s, however, Kinoshita has returned to oil painting, embarking on a new quest to capture time and space in a two-dimensional plane. Kinoshita’s paintings are characterized by bold, layered brushstrokes that create a multi-dimensional and profound composition. These works overflow with a sense of presence and vitality that transcends words and stands as an independent entity. Through these works, we can find one of the answers to the question she has been pursuing all her life “What is existence in the world in which we exist?”.
