René Lalique

René Lalique was a jewelry designer and glass artist who throve in Paris from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century.

Lalique was born in 1860 in a small village of Ay in the Champagne region of France. Although his family soon returned to Paris, they would visit this village every summer. Surrounded by nature in the countryside, young Lalique constantly sketched the abundant flowers and developed a rich poetic sensibility and keen observation skills. His artworks, inspired by nature, can be traced back to his early childhood. At the age of 16 in 1876, he became an apprentice jeweler and studied techniques at the school of decorative arts. From 1882, he established his own distinctive style as a freelance jewelry designer. Lalique established his unshakable position at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universal. The motifs of animals, plants and mythological figures utilized in his artworks became the centerpiece, elevating the beauty of the designs and challenging traditional notions of jewelry. Recognized as a pioneer of “Art Nouveau Jewelry”, Lalique continued to create a series of Art Nouveau-style works.

However, his interests shifted towards the realm of glass craftsmanship, which had long captivated him, despite his acclaim as a jewelry designer. When he was commissioned by a perfumer to design perfume bottle labels, Lalique rented a glass manufacturing factory the following year and began producing not only labels but also perfume bottles. Lalique’s designs, which were not merely containers but harmonized with the concept of perfume, were innovative. Additionally, his attempt to mass-produce glass household items such as vases and lighting fixtures with the same quality as unique pieces aligned with the changing Art Deco trend.

By transitioning to a glass artist, Lalique remarkably showed his talent at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris. The exquisite aesthetics and sensibility of Lalique, a master who belonged to both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements, have been cherished not only in Europe and America but also by many people in Japan.
