Setsuro Takahashi is a representing lacquer artist the contemporary art world, expanding the realm of lacquer art from the world of traditional crafts to pure art.
Born in 1914 in Kitahotaka Village (now Azumino City) in Minami-Azumi District, Nagano Prefecture, he enrolled in the Lacquer Department of Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts). After graduating from the school, his exceptional artistic talent was recognized at an unusually young age, leading to his achievement of selection in the Bunten (now known as Nitten, the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) in his mid-20s, and thus, his career as an artist blossomed. Takahashi devised the “lacquer panel”, a flat format, to maximize the charm and beauty of lacquer, allowing him to freely express motifs and designs beyond existing frameworks on these panels. Furthermore, he developed techniques to create a transparent texture and nuances of light and shadow. Through these trial-and-error efforts, Takahashi focused on the color combination of black and gold. He carved line patterns on lacquered surfaces and applied gold leaf and gold powder into the lines using the “sokkin” technique, establishing a modern and innovative style with a black and gold theme.
Takahashi not only worked on flat artworks but also applied lacquer to various forms such as three-dimensional works, jars, crafts, and prints. His unwavering passion and challenges for lacquer breathed new life into the world of lacquer art, presenting the infinite possibilities hidden within this medium.
