内藤絹子／Naito Kinuko

内藤絹子（1970～）は、関西を中心に活躍する造形作家です。

大阪府生まれの内藤は、京都精華大学美術学部造形学科で版画を学んだのち、1995年に同大学の大学院美術研究科を修了しました。翌年からは兵庫県朝来市を拠点に創作活動を展開しており、2000年に開催されたVOCA展での奨励賞を皮切りに、2008年にはあさご芸術の森大賞展で準大賞を、2017年には亀高文子記念・赤艸社（せきそうしゃ）賞を獲得するなど、その新たな才能は広く認められるところとなります。個展の開催やグループ展への出品も多く、後者ではイスラエルやドイツ、フランスなど海外の美術館にも作品を発表しています。文字を抽象絵画のように表現する一連の作品は、20代の頃に目にした、大阪の下町の壁に描かれた数々の落書きから着想を得ています。名もなき人々の内面を赤裸々に映し出した文字や記号は内藤に衝撃を与え、その経験が、自身の内面から湧きあがった言葉を絵画として描くことへとつながりました。以降、「祈りの言葉」をテーマに制作を続けていくなか、2011年に「アルメニア十字の石－拓本プロジェクト」の調査に同行し、アルメニアの初期キリスト教会を訪れた際には、古い教会の壁面に残された人々の祈りの痕跡に心を動かされ、その体験をもとに「闇からの伝言板」シリーズなどを生み出しました。

内藤の創作では、主に版画用インクと紙を使った「モノタイプドローイング」という手法が採用されています。版画用インクを塗った紙の裏側から指や鉛筆などで圧力をかけ、もう一枚の紙へ転写する独自の版画技法によって、文字や記号のモチーフのみならず、作家の手跡や筆圧までもが、作品上に細やかに写しとられます。ギリシャ語の「MONOS（ただ一つの）」に由来する「モノタイプ」の言葉通り、そこには二度とは再現できない一瞬一瞬の形跡や感触が内包されているのです。ちなみに、【闇からの伝言板Ⅰ】（2013年）には柿渋やミツロウなど様々な素材が用いられており、インクとはまた違う、静謐で不思議な味わいがただよっています。内藤は、ときにアトリエを出て、いつもとは異なる空間へと「越境」していくことが自身の創作において重要であると語っています。内藤にとってこの「越境」とは、ある世界から境界線を越えて別の世界へと足を踏み入れることであるとともに、自身の内面世界と未知なる外界を行き来することを意味してもいます。そうした過程を経て浮かびあがった内藤の様々な思いは、たしかな手触りをもって紙の上へとにじみ出ていき、大胆さと繊細さ、激しさと静けさが入り混じるその画面を通じて、鑑賞者は作者の内面世界を心地よくたゆたうことができます。

Kinuko Naito (1970-) is a prominent sculptor active primarily in the Kansai region.

Born in Osaka Prefecture, Naito studied printmaking at the Department of Fine Arts at Kyoto Seika University before completing her studies at the Graduate School of Fine Arts at the university in 1995. From the following year, she has been based in Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, where she has been engaged in creative activities. Starting with the Encouragement Award at the VOCA Exhibition in 2000, she has received recognition such as the Semi-Grand Prize at the Asago Art Forest Exhibition in 2008 and the KAMETAKA Fumiko Memorial – Akausosha Award in 2017, showcasing the broad acknowledgment of her innovative talent. She holds numerous solo exhibitions and participates in group exhibitions, with her works being showcased in overseas museums in countries such as Israel, Germany, and France. Her series of works, which express letters in an abstract painting style, were inspired by numerous graffiti seen on the walls of Osaka’s downtown in her twenties. The letters and symbols that candidly reflect the inner thoughts of anonymous individuals deeply impressed Naito, leading her experiences to translate into painting words emerging from her own inner self. Subsequently, while continuing to create under the theme of “words of prayer”, she accompanied the investigation of the “Armenian Cross Stone – Rubbing Project” in 2011. During her visit to early Christian churches in Armenia, she was moved by the traces of prayers left on the walls of ancient churches, inspiring her to create series such as “Message Boards from the Darkness”.

In Naito’s creative process, she primarily employs the technique of “Monotype Drawing”, using printmaking ink and paper. By applying pressure from the back of ink-coated paper with her fingers or a pencil and transferring it to another sheet of paper which is her unique printmaking technique, not only the motifs of letters and symbols but also the artist’s traces and brush pressure are delicately captured on the artwork. True to the word “Monotype”, derived from the Greek word “MONOS” meaning “only one”, each momentary trace and sensation that cannot be reproduced again is encapsulated within. For instance, in “Message Boards from the Darkness I” (2013), various materials such as persimmon tannin and beeswax are used, imparting a serene and mysterious flavor distinct from ink. Naito emphasizes the importance of occasionally stepping out of the studio and “crossing boundaries” into unfamiliar spaces for her creative process. For Naito, this “crossing boundaries” entails not only stepping from one world into another but also navigating between her inner world and the unknown external world. The various thoughts that emerge through such processes gradually seep onto the paper with a tangible texture, allowing viewers to comfortably immerse themselves in the artist’s inner world through the boldness and delicacy, intensity, and tranquility mingling on the canvas.
