宮脇愛子／Miyawaki Aiko

宮脇愛子は日本の彫刻家、画家です。東京生まれの宮脇は、1952年に日本女子大学文学部史学科を卒業すると、文化学院美術科に学び、洋画家の阿部展也や美術家の斎藤義重に師事しました。特に斎藤は、もともと作品を発表するつもりのなかった宮脇に対して、人に見せる意義を諭し、芸術家としての道を開かせた存在でもあります。

その後宮脇は1957年から1966年にかけて、東京のみならず欧米各地で活動を展開します。滞在中、マン・レイをはじめとする著名なアーティストたちと親交を深めるとともに、画商のアンドレ・シュレールと契約して個展を開催するなど、その才能をめきめきと伸ばし、開花させていきました。

初期は、絵肌や質感が強調された、レリーフのような油彩の抽象絵画を制作していましたが、帰国した1966年以降は、立体作品が創作の主軸となります。扱う素材も、真鍮のパイプやガラスと多岐にわたりました。こうした変化が見られる一方で、同一のモチーフの反復や光の効果など、平面作品の時代から一貫しているコンセプトも窺われます。上記のような変遷を経て生み出されたのが、ステンレスのワイヤーを用いた宮脇の代表作「うつろひ」シリーズです。「空に線を描く」イメージの延長にあるこの作品群は世界各地で展示され、季節や時間によってその形態を、あるいは空間全体を様変わりさせながら、鑑賞者に新鮮な景色を見せ続けています。

作品としての形以上に、その背後に見え隠れする「あらぬもの」を探した宮脇の芸術は、確かなものが失われた現代においてこそ、より自由に、よりしなやかに語りかけてくることでしょう。

Aiko Miyawaki is a Japanese sculptor and painter. Born in Tokyo, Miyawaki graduated from the Department of History at Japan Women’s University in 1952. After she studied at the Cultural Institute of Fine Arts, where she was mentored by the Western-style painter Nobuya Abe and the Japanese artist Yoshishige Saito. Especially Saito taught a significant role in guiding Miyawaki towards the path of an artist, even though she originally had no intention of exhibiting her works.

Afterwards, from 1957 to 1966, Miyawaki expanded her artistic activities not only in Tokyo but also in various parts of Europe and the United States. During her stays abroad, she developed close relationships with famous artists such as Man Ray and held solo exhibitions under the contract with art dealer André Schleier, showing her growing talent and artistic blossoming.

In her early period, Miyawaki created abstract oil paintings with relief-like textures and surfaces emphasizing brushwork and texture. However, after her return to Japan in 1966, three-dimensional artworks became the main focus of her creations. She explored various materials including brass pipes and glass. While these changes were apparent, her works also reveal a consistent concept that originated from her earlier flat works, such as the repetition of the same motif and the play of light. One of Miyawaki’s representative series is “Utsurohi”, which utilizes stainless steel wire. The series of artworks, which are an extension of the concept of “drawing lines in the sky”, have been exhibited worldwide and continue to offer viewers a fresh scenery by constantly changing their forms or even transforming the entire space, depending on the season and time.

Miyawaki’s artworks are an exploration of “Aranumono (something beyond the form)” which hides and reveals itself behind her artwork. In today’s world where certainty has been lost, her artworks speak more freely and gracefully to viewers.
