ザオ・ウーキー／Zao Wou-Ki

ザオ・ウーキー（趙無極）は、詩的な情緒に富んだ「抒情的抽象」の系譜に連ねられる抽象画家です。

1921年に北京の名門の家系に生まれたウーキーは、杭州の国立美術学校で東西の美術について学び、卒業後は杭州美術研究所の教授を務めていました。しかし、形骸化していく国内の画壇に不満を覚えると、1948年に新天地を求めてパリへ移住します。クレー（1879〜1940）の絵画や、当時のパリで胎動しつつあったアンフォルメルなど、さまざまな美術と出会い貪欲に吸収していったウーキーは、やがて独自の画境を切り拓いていきました。

中国の水墨画にルーツを持ち、風景や自然に材をとりながらも、そこから呼び起こされる感情や内的世界を自在な筆致と豊かな色彩で描き出した一連の作品には、まさに東洋と西洋の美意識が結晶していると言えます。1964年、ウーキーは自身の最大の支持者であるアンドレ・マルロー（1901〜1976）の助力によりフランス国籍を取得し、以降、パリを中心に国際的な活躍を続けました。日本にもしばしば足を運び、1994年には「高松宮殿下記念世界文化賞」を受賞しています。

Wou-Ki Zao is an abstract painter who is considered to be part of the lineage of “lyrical abstraction” characterized by poetic emotions.

Born in 1921 to a prominent Beijing family, Wou-Ki studied Eastern and Western art at the National Art School in Hangzhou and, after graduating, was appointed Professor at the Hangzhou Art Institute. However, discontent with the stagnating domestic art scene led him to seek new horizons, and in 1948, he relocated to Paris. There, he encountered various forms of art, including the paintings of Klee (1879-1940) and the unformel movement that was taking shape in Paris at the time, and eventually carved out his own unique painting style.

Rooted in Chinese ink painting, Wou-Ki’s series of works capture the emotions and inner worlds evoked by landscapes and nature, employing skillful brushwork and a rich palette. These artworks truly embody a fusion of Eastern and Western aesthetics. In 1964, with the help of André Malraux (1901-1976), his greatest supporter, Wou-Ki obtained French citizenship, and from then on, he continued to have an international career centered in Paris. He frequently visited Japan and received the “Praemium Imperiale Prize for World Culture” from the Japan Art Association in 1994.
