イチハラヒロコ／Ichihara Hiroko
イチハラヒロコ（1963～）は、京都生まれの現代芸術家、ランゲージ・アーティストです。
1985年に京都芸術短期大学（現・京都造形芸術大学）ビジュアルデザイン専攻科を修了後、個展を中心に創作活動を展開してきたイチハラは、シンプルなゴシック体の文字を用いたシルクスクリーン作品を主に手がけています。言語を用いたアートといえば、コンセプチュアル・アートの旗手、ローレンス・ウィナー（1942～2021）や、電光掲示板などのメディアを通じて社会問題へのメッセージを発信するジェニー・ホルツァー（1950～）などが挙げられますが、イチハラが扱うのは詩的なフレーズや高尚な格言ではなく、「愛と笑い」をテーマとした日常に根差した言葉です。【なんでもできるのに、掃除だけできない。】【悪いけどこの恋はにがさん。】といった鑑賞者の共感を呼ぶフレーズから、【うわーん。】や【遅れるで。】など、普段なら意識にものぼらず埋もれてしまうような一言など、すくいあげられた様々な言葉は文脈から切りはなされ、一つのイメージとして展示されます。そのとき、鑑賞者は目の前にある「言葉」そのものと純粋に向き合い、今の自分だからこその受け止め方を経験できるのです。一方、【私のことは、彼にきいて】という作品では実在の23名の男性の名前が並べられていますが、本作について作者は、「イチハラヒロコはこの23人によってつくられている」ことを示した「愛のカタチ」であると語っています。このように、作り手の極めて個人的な部分が開示されることで、鑑賞者は「自分ならどうだろう」と置き換えて考えるきっかけを与えられることになります。
そごう心斎橋店の工事仮囲いや横浜のスケートリンクなど、屋外での展示も多数実施されており、イギリスのショッピングセンターで「万引きするで。」と書かれた紙袋を2000枚配布するパフォーマンスを披露した際には、国際的にも注目を集めました。1993年に東京の複合文化施設スパイラルで開催した個展「スパイラルで、やるらしいで。ほ、ほんまか。」では、たまたまそこを訪れた人に白塗りしてある板を500円で買ってもらい、言葉をつづらせて自身の作品のとなりに展示するという、実験的な試みが行われました。その翌年の夏には、水戸芸術館現代美術センターとの共同企画として「こんどはことばの展覧会だ」と題したワークショップが実施され、年代やテーマを問わず、一般公募で集まった多種多様な言葉が一挙に並べられました。このとき、応募者の手書きの文字は、イチハラの作品と同じように写植文字に直されて作品化されており、その作業を経て、各人の癖や個性が拭い去られたあとに残る「言葉」そのものが力強く浮かびあがっていきます。
簡潔で軽やかな文体や均整の取れた文字組みは、広告のキャッチコピーやSNSのポストとの共通性を指摘されることも少なくありません。しかし、画家がモチーフ探しをするように言葉を探し、画家が構図を考えるように言葉をドローイングするというイチハラの作品は、芸術的な表現としての切実さをたしかに内包しています。そうして生み出された一連の言葉たちは、それを目の当たりにした者の心を否応なく巻きこみ、今まで触れたことのなかった鑑賞者自身の内面世界へと誘うのです。
Hiroko Ichihara (b. 1963) is a prominent contemporary artist born in Kyoto, renowned for her distinctive approach to conceptual and language-based art. Since graduating from the Kyoto College of Art in 1985, she has developed a prolific career centred on solo exhibitions, primarily featuring silkscreen works characterised by bold, minimalist Gothic typefaces.
While her work invites comparison to figures like Lawrence Weiner or Jenny Holzer, Ichihara eschews lofty maxims and political slogans in favour of words rooted in the mundane. Her themes of ‘love and laughter’ elevate everyday utterances—phrases like “I can do anything, but I can’t clean” or a simple “I’ll be late”—stripping them of their original context to present them as powerful, standalone images that resonate with the viewer’s own experiences.
A defining characteristic of her practice is the radical disclosure of the personal, most notably in the work Ask Him About Me. By listing the names of 23 real men who have shaped her life, Ichihara describes the piece as a “form of love,” challenging the audience to reflect on their own interpersonal histories and the fragments of identity formed by others.
Ichihara’s work frequently moves beyond the gallery, engaging the public through large-scale outdoor installations on construction fencing or ice rinks. Her performance at a British shopping centre—distributing 2,000 bags emblazoned with the provocative phrase “I’m going to shoplift”—gained significant international acclaim for its witty subversion of consumer culture.
The artist also fosters participatory dialogue, as seen in her 1993 experimental project at Tokyo’s Spiral complex and her subsequent ‘Exhibition of Words’ at Art Tower Mito. By converting public submissions into her signature phototypeset style, she effectively erases individual handwriting to let the raw power of the “words” themselves emerge, democratising the artistic process.
Though her concise style shares a visual language with advertising slogans or social media posts, her process remains deeply painterly. Ichihara selects words as a painter chooses motifs, and composes them with an earnestness that transcends mere graphic design, inevitably drawing the viewer into a previously untouched inner world.
