馬徳昇／Ma Desheng

馬徳昇（マァ・ダァション、1952～）は、北京生まれの抽象画家です。中国最初の現代美術グループ「星星画会（シンシンホアホェイ）」の主要メンバーとして知られています。

中国青年芸術劇院で舞台美術を担当していた馬徳昇が、黄鋭（ホアン・ロェイ、1952～）や王克平（ワン・カァピン、1949～）らとともに「星星画会」を結成したのは、毛沢東（1893～1976）が主導した文化大革命（1966～1976）直後の、1979年でした。文化的な鎖国状態を脱しはじめ、海外の新しい芸術の動向を取り入れるようになったこの頃、同グループは、それまで唯一の太陽として崇められていた毛沢東の専制政治を否定し、星々の個性が輝く新しい時代を見据え、芸術の自由や政治の民主化を求めました。政府の規制にも果敢に立ち向かい、野外展や抗議デモなど旺盛な活動を展開したものの、1980年代初頭に政府によって実施された反精神汚染キャンペーンを契機に、馬徳昇を含むメンバーのほとんどが半ば亡命のかたちで国外へと拠点を移し、グループは事実上の解散を余儀なくされます。しかし、社会主義リアリズムを端緒に、旺盛な実験精神と批判精神をもって自由な表現を模索した足跡は、中国の現代アートの出発点として深く刻まれています。

「まず自分が誰に奉仕するか、何の効果があるかを考えてから創作するという態度は、芸術に背くことに外ならない」と考え、「芸術は自分のためのもの」と主張する馬徳昇の作品は、主に重厚な抽象水墨画です。農村の情景を斬新な構図で描いた【息】（1979年）や、絵を描く画家の様子を切り取った【六平方米】（1980年）といった木板画でも、白と黒のシンプルなコントラストが画面を引き締めています。なお、この【息】については、ドイツの版画家でプロレタリア芸術の先駆者であるケーテ・コルヴィッツ（1867～1945）の銅版画など、社会主義リアリズム作品に見られる白と黒のバランスとの酷似が指摘されています。また、文学集団「今天（ジンティエン）」に所属する詩人たちの作品の表紙や挿絵も多数担当しており、自身も『門』（1982年）や『吟味する文字』（1984年）といった詩作を発表するなど、文学的な分野でも才能を発揮しました。

中国文学者の牧陽一氏によると、「星星画会」の主要メンバーが最後に集まったのは、1983年の夏でした。小学校の教室で開かれた展覧会では、雨漏りのために馬徳昇の水墨画が一枚破損してしまうという、ささやかなエピソードも残されています。黄鋭が日本へ、王克平がパリへ旅立ったあとは、馬徳昇も1985年にスイスへ渡り、以降はパリを中心に海外で活動しています。

Ma Desheng (1952-), an abstract painter born in Beijing, is known as a key member of China’s first contemporary art group, the Stars Art Group.

Ma Desheng, who was in charge of stage art at the China Youth Art Theater, formed the Stars Art Group in 1979 along with Huang Rui (1952-) and Wang Keping (1949-), shortly after the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) led by Mao Zedong (1893-1976). During this time, China began to break free from its cultural isolation and started to embrace new trends in art from overseas. The group rejected Mao Zedong’s autocratic rule, which had previously been revered as the sole sun, and envisioned a new era where individual stars could shine, advocating for artistic freedom and political democratization. Despite bravely confronting government regulations through outdoor exhibitions and protest demonstrations, the group was effectively disbanded in the early 1980s as most members, including Ma, moved abroad in semi-exile following the government’s anti-spiritual pollution campaign. However, their legacy of exploring free expression with a spirit of experimentation and critique, starting from socialist realism, remains a significant starting point for contemporary Chinese art.

Ma Desheng, who believes that “creating art with consideration of whom it serves and what effects it has is nothing but a betrayal of art”, asserts that “art is for oneself”. His works mainly consist of profound abstract Chinese ink paintings. His woodblock prints, such as “Breath” (1979), which depicts rural scenes with innovative compositions, and “Six Square Meters” (1980), which captures the scene of a painter at work, also feature a simple black-and-white contrast that tightens the visual impact. “Breath” has been noted for its resemblance to the balance of black and white seen in the socialist realism works of Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945), a German printmaker and pioneer of proletarian art. Additionally, Ma has illustrated numerous covers and illustrations for works by poets belonging to the literary group “Today” and has also showcased his literary talent by publishing his own poetry collections such as “Gate” (1982) and “Words Under Scrutiny” (1984).

According to Chinese literature scholar Yoichi Maki, the last gathering of the main members of the Stars Art Group was in the summer of 1983. A small anecdote from an exhibition held in an elementary school classroom recounts how one of Ma’s Chinese ink paintings was damaged by rain leakage. After Huang Rui departed for Japan and Wang Keping for Paris, Ma Desheng also moved to Switzerland in 1985 and has since been active overseas, primarily in Paris.
