Victor Vasarely (1908-1997) is a pioneer of “Op Art”, which became a sensation in the 1960s, known for its distinctive visual effects.
Born in the ancient city of Pécs in southwestern Hungary in 1908, Vasarely initially aspired to study medicine at Budapest University. However, he shifted his focus to art, left the university, and enrolled in an art school influenced by the Bauhaus tradition in Weimar in 1928. After relocating to Paris in 1930, he worked in the field of design in the advertising industry while pursuing his painting. Initially, his work was influenced by Surrealism and Constructivism, but towards the late 1930s, he developed a growing interest in optical illusions created through the repetition of the same patterns. Drawing inspiration from pioneers like Mondrian (1872-1944) and Kandinsky (1866-1944), he embarked on a journey to explore his own artistic style.
After leaving the advertising industry in 1944, he devoted himself to creative endeavors. In 1947, he became involved in the establishment of the Dénès René Gallery in Paris and held his inaugural solo exhibition there. Subsequently, his artistic style became increasingly characterized by geometric abstraction. In the 1950s, Vasarely, who had mastered the use of black and white composition, achieved a style that produced three-dimensional effects through rich colors and intricate arrangements as he entered the 1960s, enhancing his international reputation. The artistic movement known as Op Art was short-lived. However, Vasarely continued his research into optical illusions, producing not only paintings but also many experimental three-dimensional works, including murals and prints.
