セザール／Cesar
セザール（1921〜1998）は、20世紀後半に活躍したフランスの彫刻家です。アカデミー賞に相当するフランスの「セザール賞」は彼の名前にちなんでおり、そこで授与されるトロフィーも彼が制作したものとして知られています。
1921年、フランスのマルセイユに生まれたセザールは、1935年から1943年までをマルセイユ美術学校にて、以降はパリ国立美術学校にて芸術の手ほどきを受け、卒業後はモンペリエで製陶工の職業訓練を受けつつ、創作の道へと進んでいきました。その中で、同じく彫刻家であり仲間だったジャコメッティ（1901〜1966）に触発され、彫刻の伝統や既成概念にとらわれない新たな造形を模索し、くず鉄などの廃物に可能性を見出しました。こうした素材を溶接した人や動物、昆虫の彫刻で注目を集めた1950年代を経て、プレス機でスクラップにされる自動車から着想を得た1960年代は「コンプレッション（圧縮）」シリーズを発表し、フランスの美術界に大きな論争を巻き起こしました。さらに、60年代後半は先のシリーズとは真逆の、泡状に膨らむ発砲ポリウレタンを用いた「エクスパンション（膨張）」なる一連の作品を、世界中で公開制作しました。
有名な作品の一つとして、1965年に初めて発表した、自身の親指を高さ41センチに拡大した彫刻が挙げられます。親指を型取りしたこの作品は制作されるごとにスケールを増していき、1993年にパリで公開されたものは12メートルにも及ぶ巨大さで人々を驚かせました。
自らを「田舎者のアルティザン（職人）」と呼ぶセザールは、日用品や廃品などの非伝統的な技法で革新を求めたヌーヴォー・レアリスムに先んじて、すなわち理念や主義によってではなく、自身の想像力や純粋な創作意欲によって上記のような作品を生み出しました。それらが鑑賞者に与えるインパクトや視覚体験は、今日も色褪せることなく強烈な存在感を放っています。
Cesar (1921-1998) was a French sculptor who flourished in the latter half of the 20th century. The French equivalent of the Academy Awards, known as the “Cesar Awards” is named in his honor, and the trophies presented there are also known as creations crafted by him.
Cesar, born in Marseille, France in 1921, received artistic guidance from 1935 to 1943 at the Marseille School of Fine Arts. Subsequently, he continued his artistic education at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris. After graduating, he pursued a creative path while undergoing vocational training as a ceramicist in Montpellier. He was inspired by the fellow sculptor Giacometti (1901-1966), and as a result, Cesar explored new forms that were not bound by the traditions and established concepts of sculpture. He found potential in discarded materials, such as scrap metal. Cesar gained attention in the 1950s for his sculptures of welded figures, animals, and insects crafted from fused materials. Moving into the 1960s, he found inspiration in crushed cars processed by a hydraulic press, leading to the introduction of the “Compression” series. This collection sparked considerable controversy in the French art scene. In the latter part of the ‘60s, deviating from his earlier works, Cesar unveiled the “Expansion” series, using expanding foam polyurethane to create bubble-like sculptures. Notably, he created these expansions in the presence of an audience worldwide.
One of his notable works is a sculpture he first presented in 1965, enlarging his own thumb to a height of 41 centimeters. This sculpture, cast from a mold of his thumb, increased in scale with each iteration. The version unveiled in Paris in 1993, reaching a colossal size of 12 meters, astounded audiences. Cesar, who referred to himself as a “rural artisan” preceded the Nouveau Réalisme movement by seeking innovation through unconventional techniques involving everyday items and discarded materials. Unlike being guided by ideologies or principles, he created works like the enlarged thumb sculpture mentioned above through his own imagination and pure creative drive. The impact and visual experiences these works offer to observers continue to exude a powerful presence that remains undiminished to this day.
