前田昭博／Maeta Akihiro

前田昭博（1954～）は、重要無形文化財「白磁」の保持者であり、現代の日本工芸界を代表する陶芸家の一人です。

鳥取県八頭郡河原町（現・鳥取市河原町）に生まれた前田が白磁と出会ったのは、大阪芸術大学工芸学科陶芸専攻に在学中のことでした。様々な焼き物を学んでいくなかで、白一色で魅せる造形やろくろの表現力に惹きつけられ、すっかり白磁のとりことなると、1977年に同大学を卒業後、郷里に帰って「やなせ窯」を築き、白磁の技法や表現を独学で追求していきました。前田の作陶では、まずろくろで内から外へとふくらませるように器の形を整えた後、手指で丁寧に圧力をかけて面取りや捻りを施し、ふくよかな曲線を作りあげます。その滑らかな表面に光沢を抑えた半透明の釉薬をかけて焼成すると、自然の光のなかで繊細な変化を見せる、美しい陰影が生まれるのです。土は、九州天草から取り寄せた陶石の粉に水分を加え、粘土状に練り上げたものを使用しています。

優れた芸術性と洗練された現代感覚にあふれる前田の作品は、白磁の新たな可能性を提示するものとして高い評価を受けました。1991年の第11回日本陶芸展における毎日新聞社賞や、1993年の第48回新匠工芸展における富本賞、2000年の第47回日本伝統工芸展における朝日新聞社賞など数多くの賞を獲得したほか、2007年には紫綬褒章を受章し、2013年には先述の通り重要無形文化財保持者に認定されています。アジアや欧米各国の展覧会にも招待出品しており、陶磁器収集で知られるスイスのアリアナ美術館や、韓国の利川（イチョン）世界陶磁器センター、イギリスの大英博物館に作品が収蔵されているなど、その独自性や美しさは国際的にも認められています。ただでさえ国内での作り手が少ない白磁を、陶磁器の産地ではない故郷の過疎地でひとり根気強く作り続けた前田にとって、山陰ならではのしっとりとした雪の白さや、そこに描かれる自然の陰影は、自身が目指す作品の手本となりました。現在もその地で制作を続けながら、日本の工芸を継承していく人間として工芸による地域づくりの活動も展開し、移住してきた若手作家たちを率先して支援しています。

前田の白磁には、鑑賞者や使い手を包みこむような柔らかさやぬくもりがあります。それは、人々の悲しみを癒し、活力や喜びをもたらすような器づくりを目指す彼の優しさそのものなのかもしれません。

Akihiro Maeta (1954-) is one of the leading ceramic artists in contemporary Japanese crafts, known as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property for “Hakuji” (white porcelain).

Maeta, born in Kawahara town, Yazu District, Tottori Prefecture (now Kawahara, Tottori City), encountered Hakuji during his studies at the Ceramic course at Department of Crafts, Ceramics Osaka University of Arts. Amidst learning various pottery techniques, he was drawn to the expressive power of creating forms solely in white and the potential of the potter’s wheel.
Completely captivated by Hakuji, after graduating from the university in 1977, Maeta returned to his hometown and established the “Yanase Kiln”, where he pursued techniques and expressions of Hakuji through self-study. In Maeta’s pottery process, he first shapes the vessel from the inside out on the potter’s wheel, then meticulously applies pressure by hand to create facets and twists, sculpting voluptuous curves. After applying a semi-transparent glaze that suppresses glossiness to the smooth surface, firing results in the creation of beautiful shadows that delicately change under natural light. He uses clay-like substances made by mixing clay powder from Amakusa, Kyushu, with water.

Maeta’s works, brimming with artistic excellence and refined contemporary sensibility, have been highly praised for presenting new possibilities for Hakuji. He has received numerous awards, including the Mainichi Shimbun Award at the 11th Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition in 1991, the Tomimoto Prize at the 48th Shinsho Kogei Exhibition in 1993, and the Asahi Shimbun Award at the 47th Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 2000. In 2007, he was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal, and in 2013, as previously mentioned, he was recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property. His works have been exhibited internationally in Asia, Europe, and the United States, and are housed in institutions such as the Ariana Museum in Switzerland, known for its ceramic collection, the Icheon World Ceramic Center in Korea, and the British Museum. His uniqueness and beauty have been recognized internationally. For Maeta, who persevered in creating Hakuji single-handedly in his hometown, which is not a pottery-producing region, the soft whiteness of the snowy San’in region and the natural shadows depicted there became the models for his works. While continuing his production in that area, he also engages in craft-based community development activities as a custodian of Japanese crafts, actively supporting young artists who have migrated to the region.

Maeta’s Hakuji possesses a softness and warmth that envelop viewers and users alike. Perhaps it embodies his own kindness, aiming to create vessels that heal people’s sorrows and bring vitality and joy.
